The Name
The name Ātea was gifted by Professors Pou Temara (Ngāi Tūhoe) and Rangi Matamua (Ngāi Tūhoe). Ātea is described as space, a wide expanse, or something that is clear and free from obstruction. In conceptualizing Ātea, it captures the possibilities of this space, both its hypothetical, imaginary, and infinitely unobstructed potential to create new and unrealized mechanisms with technologically advanced tools to connect Māori to their reo, whakapapa, whānau, iwi, culture and identity.
